Punk As A Doornail began in 1999 as a noise band to purposely annoy people because it was our opinion back then that punk was dead. We created the sham demo and booked ourselves in clubs, bars and bowling alleys, just to be belligerent and make a lot of noise from found objects that we made instruments out of. These included the one-stringed baseball bat, the sh*tstick, the detour sign, the ax-tar, and of course:
The OC Weekly wrote about us a lot, probably because they thought the punk movement was pretty silly too. Pop punk really killed punk as far as we're concerned. The OC Weekly wrote about us a lot, probably because they thought the punk movement was pretty silly too. Pop punk really killed punk as far as we're concerned. But, what the hell...we kept flogging the punk horse any way. The problem with that is that if you play enough, eventually songs form. Though this went against the initial conceptual art, we embraced it and only two of us showed up to practice, Cary Pealer and Keith Irish. We eventually relied only on the skatar (skateboard guitar) and trap kit (drum kit) and made two albums:
Flogging the Punk Horse (Zodiac Killer Records)
Suck 4 Cash (Self Release - digital only)
Now, the second problem. With songs, comes tonality. We eventually started to have songs that were in musical scales. Keith actually ended up learning how to play the skatar. Now other instruments could be played along with the skatar besides just drums. But, we decided not to add more musicians to the band. Forget that! That's too many phone calls and schedules to coordinate. Let's just keep it simple and continue as a duo.
By this time is was 2018 and Johnny Rage re-joined the band. Johnny was around during the early noise years and was our sh*tsticker. He also filled in on the trap kit when needed. Now he's the drummer and vocalist. The skatar is carried by Keith Irish, who is also on vocals.
The reboot of PAAD was started because VFMS wanted to book us in Hemet, CA and it sounded like too much fun! We've been flogging the punk horse since 1999 and have re-invented ourselves probably over six times. The current project is very self-indulgent and we have a lot of fun pulling this off! Here's to seeing you at our next performance and we hope you enjoy our music!
Sincerely,
Keith Irish
